About

“Colour is my language.
Memory is where I begin.”

Amy Kim is a contemporary visual artist based in Melbourne, Australia. Her practice is rooted in a deep curiosity — a desire to explore the unknowns within herself and the world around her. Born in Seoul, South Korea, Amy moved to Melbourne in 2000 to study Fine Art at the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne, majoring in painting.

Her practice begins in the personal — in memory, in the quiet archaeology of a life lived between two worlds. In the small, unremarkable moments of connection that somehow stay with you long after everything else has faded. That experience of in-between — belonging somewhere and somewhere else at once — runs through everything she makes. So does the purity she finds in children, in the way they meet the world with complete openness, before meaning gets fixed and feeling gets named.

"I don't always know what a painting means when I begin it. I follow colour. For me, colour isn't decoration — it's feeling itself, arriving before thought does. Raw, wordless, and honest."

Amy works in abstract and minimal forms — bold compositions that resist fixed meaning. Through colour, she reaches for the feelings that live just beyond language — the ones we recognise but cannot name. Her work honours vulnerability, celebrates the unnoticed, and creates visual spaces where people can feel seen, remembered, and quietly understood.

Beyond the studio, Amy has worked across a range of creative disciplines — theatre design, art direction, interior styling, graphic design, and teaching. These multidisciplinary experiences continue to inform her open-minded and intuitive approach to both artmaking and collaboration. At heart, she uses art as a bridge — between people, cultures, and inner worlds.

She is still searching. Still unfolding. Still surprised by what surfaces when she lets go. She shows up, stays honest, and lets the work lead — because that is the only way she knows how to make something real.

Amy works from her studio in Melbourne. Her work is available through her website and selected art galleries.
